ralph j. bunche was born in Detroit  His father Fred was a barber  Grace, went to live in Los Angeles with their maternal grandmother and He was the first black American to gain a PhD in political science from an American university. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles and graduated summa cum laude in 1927
